Into the Outhouse

--

Outhouses in the early 19th century were introduced to the Southern states because of the discovery that hookworms were responsible for large portions of the population suffering from anemia. I heard an interesting story on the radio about this topic and I would like to dig deeper than the summary they provided.

My questions are as follows: how did they solve widespread parasitic infections in the South? how did they affect the Southern economy? how did Southern communities respond to them in the early 20th? I think that these questions will help me to discover and share a story about hygiene being linked to economics.
