I wanted to major in history to help myself be a stronger writer. I want to pursue writing science op-eds as a career and I am therefore working towards degrees in computer science, Earth and planetary sciences, English, and History. I also enjoy dabbling in fiction and (and have had some published that were written with the aid of skills and information learned in history classes), and history serves as a great tool for inspiration and building believable structure and context. As for writing op-eds, history is meant to help me learn critical-thinking and how to understand a story in context of the history surrounding it, in order to explain it as best as possible to wide ranges of audiences.

I hope to discover a variety of interests that I can come to understand on a working level in order to be as well-rounded as possible so that I can be a great problem-solver. I aim to achieve an impressive record to help me stand out to potential employers.

I think that this lesson taught me that getting a career in nearly every field is easier for people with history degrees than for those without. It did not illuminate and career paths that were very intriguing for me, but it showed me that the historical thinking skills obtained in a history program are great to demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving to any potential employers in order to gain an edge on competition.
